The novel coronavirus has continued to sweep the globe, infecting 662,073 people around the world. So far, 30,780 individuals have died from COVID-19. The recent jump in the death toll was contributed in part by cases reported in the UK and Italy.

UK health authorities announced that 260 people died in 24 hours while Italy reported nearly 900 deaths overnight.

On Saturday night, the United States' death toll surpassed 2,000, just two days after reaching 1,000.

Europe and the Americas are seeing the vast majority of new cases. The US has the world's highest case total — over 100,000 — since it surpassed China and Italy on March 26. Italy has the world's second-highest caseload: 92,472.

New York has the largest number of coronavirus cases of any US state — more than 52,000, which accounts for nearly 8% of the world's coronavirus cases.

In total, at least 177 countries and territories have reported cases. Many have declared nationwide lockdowns or otherwise dramatically restricted travel. This has left hundreds of millions of people under unprecedented restrictions: a third of the world is now under some form of lockdown.

A dozen Business Insider staffers are keeping this post updated with the most recent developments around the clock.

Here's the latest.

Coronavirus cases have been confirmed in 177 countries and territories.

China appears to have contained the spread of the coronavirus, but cases are surging in other parts of the world.

China — where the virus first began to spread in late 2019 — has seen a sharp drop-off in its rate of new cases.

Italy has recorded more than 10,023 deaths, and Spain more than 5,820, both overtaking China's death toll. In China, 3,299 people have died.

At least 139,263 people known to be infected have recovered, mostly in China.

The number of deaths and cases is still surging worldwide. Some 3,271 people died from the coronavirus on March 27, the highest number since the outbreak began.

Data compiled by the statistics website Worldometer, which uses information from organizations like the United Nations Population Division and World Health Organization, shows that March 27 was the deadliest day so far: 3,271 deaths were reported.

This makes March 27 the eleventh record-breaking day in a row for daily deaths.

A grand optical illusion teases conspiracy under the Louvre

The 183,000-square-foot mural was both an amazing 3D illusion and a metaphor of the ephemeral nature of art itself. An amazing 183,000-square-foot optical illusion collage appeared last Friday at the Louvre’s courtyard showing the imaginary, fantastic guts of the museum’s glass pyramid– only to be destroyed in a few hours by visitors. No, apparently we can’t have nice things, but its destruction was actually part of the art itself. Read Full Story
